Sav Question

iam4soup Jun 07, 2004 06:34 PM

I have a baby sav that I have been keeping in a very large aquarium, about 100 gallons. He's in there because it's going to be his home for the next few years and I figured I may as well let him get used to it. However, he is not growing very much nor is he eating an awful lot. Is the tank too big? Should I keep him in something smaller and work him up to that big one? Thanks for your help

Hey man,

The tank seems to be a little big for a baby sav. I'd suggest a smaller tank until he gets better at hunting or nipping off the jumping legs of your crickets and feed from a bowl. Hunting mmay be the problem, if you're already feeding from a bowl then smaller tank will do. Ofcourse this is assuming that all temps are right and there are plenty of hides. Another thing could be, if you're feeding live, you may not be monitering the food intake correctly. It's hard to find all the missing crickets hiding in a well furnished 100 G.

Also, 100G tank may not be ennough for even a year. My sav was half grown and 16 inches at 5 months. A full grown should have a bigger place than a 100G. Better start planning to build one.

Hope my rantings helped.

I'm sure that the extra space of a 100 g. tank
is not what is affecting your monitors appetite.

Does he have a basking spot of a 110-130 degrees F.?

Does he have a good hide spot at the cool (80 F.) end?

Try offering a variety such as superworms and roaches.
