Am I nuts?

When my king laid her clutch, I thought they were perfect. It didn't take me more than a couple of days to start fretting... Were they bad? Did the assymetry mean they were bad? Could I candle them without a penlight, and in a clutch? Would it make a difference? Would they go bad? Did I brumate the snakes properly? Were my young snakes even fertile? Were the eggs going bad?

Then I got sort of fatalistic, and I said to myself, "These eggs are all bad, but it's a good experience, and since everyone says only really stinky brown gloopy eggs are bad, I'll wait till mine are at that stage until I throw them out"

Finally, almost three weeks after they were laid, I'm starting to say to myself... "Wow, something about those eggs is different, I think they might actually be good!"

Does everyone go through this?

And WHY do the eggs smell like spearmint?

Will it get BETTER when my Blotched King lays her eggs, or will it get worse? Then I'll have two clutches to worry about, overlapping for about a month. THEN I'll start biting my nails and explaining to the kids why they can't check the eggs every single day. (I plan to have a planned time when the family takes a peek, mists if necessary, and then closes the lid for another twenty four to forty eight hours before the next peek) (yarite, I'm sure it'll be once a day checks)

Anyway, I'm sure that this is all old stuff, just thought I would share.

Hey Kerby, since I saw one of your old messages about crossing this'n'that I wondered if you had an opinion, we've crossed the High White you bred, to the newport phase dot/dash yellow/black female. Any ridiculous predictions on the outcome (ridiculous since the hatchlings, if there are hatchlings, are going to be what they are and all the predictions in the world won't change it!)

LOL If I can predict the High White to a Newport. Actually the High White is a possible het for albinism. Did you get the Newport from me? If you did, it is possible het for albinism as well. I think you won't get any 2 babies to look the same. I do not think that any babies will look like the Newport. The High White has a tendacy to overtake both banding and striping so I think that the High White will break up the Newport pattern. I also think that brown dominates black IMO. The babies will get browner as they get older. And the white can turn to a cream or light yellow. I've had some that retained their hard white and some turn to a cream color. I am now dividing my groups into hard whites, hard yellows, etc.. Eventually I will feel comfortable in predicting the outcome. One year I bred my original High White to a really black w/white spots and all came out aberrant, mostly hard black with white markings (bands, stripes, spots) and 2 came out really white with a few symetical black spots. So who knows....

p.s. Also I have a banded ground snake for you from Chino Valley. I will be at the AHA mtg on the 27th if you want to meet me there.

Thanks for the response.

I'll try to get hubby to take us to the AHA meeting.... Where is it?

I'm looking forward to the banded to add to my collection. I now have five ground snakes. They hang out together in a 15 gallon short. I was a little concerned that the three big ones might consume the two littler ones, but they all hang out together, and enjoy the crickets I give them. Been thinking I ought to put in a little "egg laying" container in case any of them are mature, and in case we have mixed genders amongst the three "adult" ones. We do have two phases already, one is a solid bright red, and the other two big ones are dusky headed with orange stripes on a gray-green background, whilst the two little ones have pitch black heads and green-tan bodies.

Anyway, yes, we got both the newport (I think that is the right name for her) and the high white and the hard white/black aberrant from you. He went off his food last fall and hasn't eaten too much this spring. (nor has the high white, but I think it's just male hormones) Oh and the Pyro is doing great, eating everything we give her.

I number my snakes instead of naming them, but I have to admit you have a better imagination than I do LOL. Wait till you get a hundred of them

The AHA mtg will be at the PHX Zoo @ 1930
