hi. i just purchaced a baby veild chameleon from a reptile show (i did LOTS of research before hand). i have had several reptiles but this is the first one that i have needed/wanted live plants in the cage. i do great with keeping reptiles healthy but i am horrible at keeping my plants alive. any tips? will miracle grow plant food sticks in the soil of the plant be harmfull to my cham?

Hi Jonathan,

welcome to the cham support board (here to help support you and your new addiction

What sort of setup is he in? How old?

veiled's will eventually nibble on plants (unlike other chams) so toxicity is an issue. Some very easy to care for plants are:

pothos (will tolerate much temp/humidity and light variations

croton (don't let it dry out b/c if it wilts too often it will weaken the plant - otherwise very easy. Usually fine in a cham cage b/c the humidity helps keep the soil from drying out

schefflera don't keep too wet otherwise fine

ferns lots of moisture and high humidity

here's one artcicle on plants

you don't have to have live plants...they look great but you don't have to have them...alot of the silk plants they sell at the pet store look good

are you afraid of them, too?? LOL!

I like my pothos silk vine, but the live plants do help with humidity (oh, and they don't bite

he is in a mesh screen cage with a few fake vines i found around the house and sterlized, a fake vine i bought at the reptile show, and some clippings from a ficus i got from my backyard and cleaned and he is 2-3 months old.
