How often can you feed beardies silkworms? and some other questions about silks.

turtlequest Jun 07, 2004 08:22 PM

I was wondering if i could order like 200 silkworms and have both of my beardies eat them until they run out....or are silkies only a treat?

How many silks can i let each bearded eat?

How healthy are they? Do i dust them?

Can they be a staple diet?

Thanks.

YES! Silkworms are a great staple food for beardies. Some would say they are even healthier than crickets!

As for how many each beardie can eat, it depends on a lot of factors like how old your beardies are and some beardies just eat more than others, so it's hard to give a clear-cut answer there. My adult beardie can eat about 15-20 1 inch silkies a day, but I've never fed my baby dragon silkies so I don't know how many he would eat. As a general rule adult beardies eat a lot less insect foods than babies.

You do still need to dust them like you would crickets, but in my opinion they are just so much cleaner, quieter, and easier to care for than crickets. If I could afford them I'd switch to silkworms as my main insect staple. Unfortunately right now money is tight so I only get them every once in a while.

Our guy LOVES his silkies...

A large silkie is about the same as 3 crickets...if that helps you any. Our guy is 11 months old and will chow down about 10 large silkies a day.

Silkies have a lot more moisture than crickets--so you will notice their poo being more watery...

Silkies make a great staple, however we decided that it was best to give our guy a varied diet. Besides the veggies, he gets silkies, crickets, occasional superworms and occasional wild caught bugs (we live in the country and our land has not been treated with chemicals).

I've been using californiasilkworms.com as my silkie supplier--very good service so far. Please let us know if you find a better supplier...

Also if you get 200 large silkies make sure you purchase enough chow--they eat a lot!
