Adding a second?

skwas12 Jun 18, 2003 08:40 PM

I have a beardie that I got as a baby about two months ago which is around nine and a half inches long. I am looking into getting a second. I have it in a 55 gallon tank so there is plenty of room but do I have to worry about the sexes of the two dragons with them getting along or not? If so how can I figure that out since they are both young. Also what size shound the second one be? Is there a problem if the second is smaller? Thank you to anyone who can help me with this.

You need to make sure that you only have one male. At this young of an age it will not matter but when they are older it will. You can have 2 females or 1 male and 1 female. If you do not know the sex of the one you have then you will need to find out. if you know of someone that can do it for you then I would take it to them. You can put the beardie in the palm of your hand with the head facing away from you. Hold the beardie firmly with your left hand and gently pull the tail up. Look at the area behind the vent. The area between the vent and the end of the tail. Look for 2 bulges on the outer parts of the tail close to the vent. If you do not see anything predominant then gently twist the tail just a little side to side. This sometimes makes the hemipenal bulges stand out more. If you do see these 2 bulges then you have a male. If not, then it is a female.

At this time I have 3 breadies in a 30 gallon tank 2 males and one female. All of them are in the same age range and in size. I have not had any problems yet with fighting or biting (knock on wood). However, next week I will be adding another but moving them all to a 55 gallon tank. If they start to fight I will have to put dividers between them. Usually if you put a smaller one in with the bigger ones they will hurt it due to they will think it is prey. I will be getting another one next week that will be the smallest one yet, she will go in the 30 gallon by herself. And you are right that it is difficult to tell the sex of the dragon at such a young age unless you have a reptile vet examine it. I would try to find one the same size and age as the one I have or do as I will be doing and divide the tank, since it will be large enough.
