panther breathing with mouth open

iamjason Jun 07, 2004 09:36 PM

i noticed today that my 3 month old male panther was perched in the hottest corner of his cage today, sunning himself under the basking lamp, but his mouth was partially open?

if its hot enough that he needs to breath through his mouth why wouldnt he move from the heat?

Some will some wont? You can try placing a fan in front of the cage to get more air flow or raise the lamp off the cage more and lower the temp. If he continues to gap his mouth you need to worry about Upper Respiratory Infections.

See if he does it in other parts of the cage. If not he is getting too hot. If he gaping in all parts of the cage he may be sick.

If you watch him you may see that he moves fairly soon. Gaping while basking is much like panting...the cham has reached his "operating temp" and is about to move out of the heat.
