When to feed?

buffysmom Jun 07, 2004 09:53 PM

I've had my Hog Island for a month now. The last time she ate was on 5/11, for her previous owner. She's quite shy & spends all her time hiding. I've tried to feed her 4 times already, the most recent being last night. She has yet to eat. I'm feeding F/T, just like her previous owner. Should I try a live pinky rat? Do you think that will get her to eat?

Make sure she is away from high traffic areas. If she is very shy, try covering half of the enclosure from view. Make sure you have correct temp and humidity levels. She's probably still nervous about unfamiliar surroundings... shipping is a major shock to these animals' senses... some handle it better than others. She may also be at the beginnings of a shed cycle. In any case don't worry yourself over it... unless the animal is visually losing weight or has passed a runny stool. You may want to offer her fresh killed (though I see np w/a live pinky) in a few days... that way if she still refuses, you can always freeze the food (no waste). Good luck. Ray
