monitors and crawdads

Fluffy my blackthroat has gotten a taste for crawdads. He/she got out when I was changing the water and found my bait for a fishing trip. The little pig knocked over the bucket and the hunt was on. I was trying to get them all back but he had one cornered and I'm not brave or dumb enough to try to take food away from him. It was quite remarkable how he handled the pinchers. He came in real low to the ground and grabbed a claw and shook the it until it came off. He ate that and did the same to the other claw. Then it was munchie time.
The instincs and intelligence of these animals are simply amazing.

I know that v. dumerlii eats freshwater crabs, etc as a large portion of their diet.... i think I've even read someplace that v. albigularis eats land hermit crabs in the wild... but don't quote me on that. For some reason I think I've heard it though.
