Ants as a food for Dart Frogs?

GJUK Jun 08, 2004 02:31 AM

Hi all

i have been thinking about buying a small colony of ants to start making a bit more variation to my frogs diets.

do all dart frogs eat all ants? or are there only a few species that are edible by frogs?

thanks alot

I've supplemented my frogs' diets with ants a number of times. I fed them to Azureus, Tinctorius, Pumilio, and Trivittatus. The only thing I would suggest is collecting the small black ants instead of any ants that like to sting, since your frogs are limited to a small space and are vulnerable to being overwhelmed by too many ants in their vivarium. Expect some escapees, however. Ants can easily climb the walls of your tank!

All of my darts seem to eschew ants, even the little black "pavement" and "sugar" ants that don't bite. But definitely avoid the "stinging" ants such as harvester or mound ants.

I would truly like to get the darts to eat the small black ants for variety, but so far, I've been unsuccessful in getting them interested.

Everyone seems to have different reactions from their frogs regarding ants. I've heard people theorize that it may have something to do with what the ants have recently been feeding on.

I have personally used the small ants from my gardens when I turn over a small stepping stone and they're crawling all over it. My tincs seem to love it!
