While in Vegas this past weekend, I decided I would try my luck herping rather than dropping the dough in the casino's. Not knowing what I was doing, or where to go, I took off and started driving some less traveled roads outside of Vegas, and got lucky enough to see a few different types of snakes.
I saw the snakes pictured below Sat. night, and want to note that I saw about a dozen of the longnose snakes. Now these longnose's, as well as all the banded gecko's I had seen, all seemed to look a lot a like, not a lot of variance in pattern as I have witnessed in tighter locales here in CA.
This was the first snake I came across, at dusk. I felt I was in a good place here, unfortunately this big guy (guessing close to 5') was a fresh DOR.
This was the second snake I found (AOR), just after complete darkness. I thought it was a shovelnose until I got close enough to take it's picture, I'm guessing it's a type of ground snake. I didn't realize how small they were, this one was about 10" long, maybe shorter.
One of the many Longnose's I found, I photo'd three others, decided to post just this one, since they all look alike.
Same here too, all the Banded Gecko's looked nearly just like this, nothing remarkable here.
Finally a rattlesnake, last snake of the night for my Nevada journey, and it had just been hit, still alive as I was taking it's picture. Don't know the sub-species name for this one either, I'm guessing a Mohave type, but nothing like the ones found here in CA, little help? Now I say finally, because I had seen so much rodent activity throughout the night, that I thought for sure I was going to see a larger type of rattlesnake, but this will do anyway, sad it had just been hit though.
Now the California stuff, from Sunday night.
This Alligator Lizard let me get right up on it to take this pic, never flinched.
This speckled lacked the speckling usually seen.
And finally, later in the evening, a Rosy Boa, this one had a lot of dorsal scarring.
