question about feeding dishes

rapunzel Jun 08, 2004 06:15 AM

Is there some place that you can purchase cups that can be attached to branches? This seems to be the hardest obstacle that I am having right now with feeding.

Don't tell my family, but I have been sprinkling pinhead crickets onto the plants-and whatever isnt eaten, is escaping into the house...hopefully my cat is then catching them. I definitely don't want to do that with larger crickets.(I suppose

I have a cup that I have been putting pinheads in, however, the only place I can set it is on the windowsill, which I then forget about, and I cook them. :P

what kind of cage are you using that crickets walk out of??...anyway, i'm sure someone sells a dish but it's easier to just make one....use a plastic tub that isn't clear, put two little holes along the rim then just tie on some fishing line and hang it wherever you want it

I agree with gutloader, it is easier just to make one. I just made two new ones yesterday. One is the bottom of a 20 oz coke bottle, and the other is the bottom of an old empty cricket feed bottle. Just make cut across the bottle about 2-3 inches from the bottom up and attatch to a branch or side of the cage with either wires or twist ties.

Thank you both.
I don't have a cage, I have set her up in a couple hanging plants/potted plants in a window of my house-with heat lamp and dripper.
I will find something to use-it seems to be the most frustrating of all.

You can also use light gage wire (like florist's craft wire) and make hooks to hang the cup from anything you like.

not to be a pest but you might find the most frustrating thing to be not having a cage...alot can go wrong

I know that not having a cage has it's own set of problems, however, it works for me right now. Its humid and the temperature here is hot. I have a UVB light above the plants for those cloudy days that the sun doesnt shine thru the screen window, and I have a heat lamp also to keep a variety of temperatures. I hooked up a drip system, and I am not worried about the occasional cricket free ranging in the house. I mist several times a day also. My plants are situated in such a way that she can be in the two hanging plants or on the window ledge where I have more plants. I also have a ficus tree sitting below the plants, sshe cant reach it, however it is there in case of a fall.
This winter I may find that I need a cage, but for right now, she seems to be doing well. THis is the first chameleon that I have ever owned, and owning her was very unexpected, so I wasnt prepared at all-as she gets large I will need to modify so that she has sturdier branches for climbing, it may be then necessary to cage her.
(and you weren't being a pest I am too new at this to consider anyones comments as "pesty" )

I have over a dozen panthers right now, and to feed all of them I just went to the local grocery store deli, and asked for some 1 quart clear deli cups. Then just using a medium/large nail heated it on the stove (use pliers to hold the nail) and then just melted 2 holes about one inch apart at the top of the cups. Then I just use some twisty ties like you get with garbage bags, to suspend the cups anywhere I want in the enclosure.

The cups are large enough to hold 12-15 3/4" crickets and deep enough to where they can't jump out.
