Can Superworms be fed as a staple food?

mikepa Jun 08, 2004 06:49 AM

Hello ,
We were wondering if Superworms can be fed as a staple for our 10 month old beardies? We also feed them dusted greens every morning and then offer insects only in the afternoon. We have previously fed them large crickets but are trying to get away from them as superworms seem much easier and they seem to like them the same or better. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

no, they are not a good staple, nutitionally they are not as good as crix/locust they contain more fat , also if fed every day ur beardy might refuse to eat other less tasty foods like crix and hold out for the worms !!

I would not offer supers more than twice a week and only 5-10 at a time. Try silkies or roaches and keep in mind that as your BD ages he will eat less animal protien. You can also use pellets and Trex VGF

On one of my other lists they said that it was Ok to
use Supers for a staple insect if the dragon is
over a year old or certain size.
Can I ask why you recommend that they not be used
as a staple?
I am talking about superworms not giant mealworms.
Of course.
Thank you, Radena

A staple must have sufficient nutritional value (supers do not) and must be able to be consumed in quantities over a sustained period of time (supers definately not).

No matter how old the BD, supers should not ever be fed in large quantities as it WILL lead to impaction no doubt at all. For a one year old, that may take a lot of supers but it will happen. Their chiton is not easily digestable and when enough builds up it's like a cork in a hole. There are other other bugs like roaches and silkies that are easily digestable and higher in nitritional value.

The big point however is that BDs over a year old should not have an animal protien staple but rather a plant staple like greens as it is healthier and in the wild would be the natural choice.

Why do the Alphabet song and Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star have the same tune?
