JimM...lizard pen remodeling job...***A few Photos***

johne Jun 08, 2004 08:05 AM

This tooka good portion of my Saturday...I did find two missing female collareds. One was near the surface, and the other was hanging out under a large rock I had in there. I removed all the rocks that were difficult to lift. This should make lizard catching a bit easier.

This was a rather fun project. Lot of rocks were removed during this job. I filled the hold left by removing the top 1/3 of rocks with more dirt, and packed it in firmly. Then I topped that off with pea-sized gravel. This slopes towards the back wall, where I have a gravel trench for drainage.

Enjoy, and good look on the persuasion :P

John Eddington

PS...my wife and I sat out there for a couple hours, just watching the lizards check out the new design. She really doesn't even enjoy them Fabulous things either.

Thanks for posting those, great work. I love the way you've landscaped it! I'm going to enjoy this aspect about keeping smaller lizards I think. I'll definitley put those pics to work for my cause.
I have a 1.3 group of aquaflames coming from William Wells within the next week or so. Can't wait!
I have a 70 gallon enclosure to keep them in until their 90 gallon corner is done. Then I'll get to work on the outdoor pen.

I found a product online called "Zoopoxy" which I'm going to use to create the mock-rock face on the back of the vivarium. It's used in lots of zoos, aquariums and museums for rocks, tree roots, etc. Another site sells texture pads which can be pressed into the wet medium to create a natural looking rock surface. I'm going to use foam to create the basic shape I want first, and silicone this to the back. Then I'll do some final shaping by hand, and use the pads last.
That's the plan anyway!

You'll have some nice lizards to work with, and a knowledgable person who knows them inside and out to deal with.

I'm very interested in this zoopoxy...do you have some websites you can send me? I have two videos on artificial rock making, but haven't had time to try them out yet.

I'm thinking the #307FR lite would be best.
If you find time to watch those videos, let me know if they are worth purchasing.

Yeah, Will seems like a great guy!

This is the more traditional method, but I think the epoxy looks like less (much less!) work and hassle - especially for a small project like mine.

That is a nice cage! I like how you can look down into the cage from the deck. I need to work on my outdoor cage so lizards can't dig their way out like the chuckwalla did.

John and Eve, thanks for the kind words. I have some nice hatchlings for Jim. All 1.3 have alot of red on them. That will fade but I'm sure they will turn out awesome.

Hey

ehuante Jun 09, 2004 05:32 PM

do you cober your enclosure? are you wary of predators like cats and racoons. Im seriously thinking of an outdoor enclosure but am afraid of predators.
thanks.

I don't have a top that would deter cats or raccoons at this time. I have a simple 2 X 4 top with a type of bird netting to keep the birds out. I do have raccoons in my neighborhood, but at night, there really in nothing that would draw them into my lizard pen. I don't put any types of feed outside that would attract them. Same with the cats...all my lizards are inactive at night, and I'm not sure a cat would work to get into the area if they could not see anything.

The other deterent is my dog...she is small, but rules the yard during the day and into the night. Most of the animals that have wandered into my yard have had near death experiences LOL
