Old post on coccidia and Albon

deetu Jun 08, 2004 08:09 AM

I know that there was a great, informative post on treating coccidia with doses and cleaning in the past but when I tried to search for it, I only got pieces of posts. Does someone remember about when that post was up so I could look under the date. Or if someone doesn't mind, repeat the doses or how it worked best.

Merlin STILL has coccidia. I am taking him to a different vet that doesn't know alot about reps but is looking up alternative sulfa drugs, just to be sure. She is putting an effort into finally healing him instead of making money like the last one did.

Thank you for any help.

PS During the last three treamtments (3 days to a week), we had him on papertowels and cleaned with vinegar. Bleach makes me sick.

CheriS has the info on her website, ReptileRooms.com. Here's the link...

Good luck clearing up Merlin's coccidia. I do know that cage cleanliness is a huge factor in getting rid of this nasty parasite. Also, don't forget to keep Merlin hydrated while he's on Albon. And try using Nolvasan to disinfect your cage. It's non-toxic to beardies, has a fresh clean scent, and wipes out coccidia! You can usually get Nolvasan at your local feed stores or online.

Novalsan, isn't that like chlorhexidine? It wipes out coccidia? I know that it is a good disenfectant, and I have used it in conjuntion with other cleaning methods during a bout with coccidia, but I didn't think it would kill it itself. That would certainly be good news!

Is your dragon thin? Is your dragon eating? Is your dragon acting normal? Be very careful in over treating your beardie. Many times you can do more harm than good with Albon. Also remember that it is extremely dificult to completely eliminate Coccidia from your dragon(s). I treat my animals just before they leave quarantine. I also treat as needed. I really don't think it is possible to get completely rid of them if you have a collection of more than two or three dragons. I think for me it is best to really concentrate on keeping my dragons healthy and there natural immune system will usually will keep the coccidia in check. In my opinion I think Coccidia is an oppurtunist and will only become a problem if other issues are present.
Thanks,
-Randy
