Can you help me choose a snake??

tegu2002 Jun 08, 2004 03:28 PM

Ok, so I want to get a new snake, something that would beable to live in a cage 1'x1'x1. At the moment I have 17 snakes and I wanted to get another snake that wouldn't require much maintaining but has a docile tempermant and that doesn't have any eating problems. At the moment I have these snakes:
2 hogg island boas
1 san diego gopher
2 corn snakes
1 rat snake
1 boa constrictor
1 blood python
3 ball pythons
4 burmese pythons
2 milksnakes

I was thinking about a house snake but the only one they have at the pet shop i very vicious and they say that they hardly ever get them in. I should also mention that I live in England and there is only one petshop in my area that sells snakes so they probably don't have very exotic snakes and not such a wide variety. I was thinking about a fiji island boa but I think these get quite big.

Rubber boa. Iv'e never owned one. A friend houses one in a 5gal. tank. Never heard any complaints from him on feeding. Iv'e seen them from time to time on the classifieds.

A viscious house snake??? I find that kinda hard to believe...mine is a sweetheart.

Either way, a house snake can get pretty big...I wouldnt house one in anything less than a 20 long.

I understand rubber boas can be kept in very small tanks, but personally I dont like that idea much. It just kinda seems wrong to me to put a snake in a 1x1x1 tank...unless its a VERY small snake like a northern redbelly or something...

What snake would you advise me getting as I am finding it hard to find any rubber boas in England and also I haven't tryed holding the house snake, I was just told that it was very viscious.

Well, like I said. There are few snakes I'd put into a 1x1x1 tank. I remember reading a general rule that a snakes tank should be long enough for them to stretch out at least 2/3 of their body. Which means, given a tank of a length of 1 foot, you're looking for a snake no longer than 18 inches (about 45cm). Not many of those out there.

Also, a 1x1 floor of a tank doesn't give you much at all for making a temperature gradient. What this means is you're also looking for a snake that lives at room temperature. So with that in mind, what is your definition of "exotic"? You might be better off trying to find a small terrestrial snake that is native to your area.

What type of small terrestrial snake would you suggest then, I don't want something that is venomous or that is classified as aggressive. Can you suggest anything???
