Please identify this lizard.

This lizard was found in a garbage dumpster in Denver, Colorado, still in the cage! It is sandy brown, about 16" long, and the skin between belly and back folds into a flap. I need to identify it in order to give it the proper care and feeding. Any help will be appreciated.

Looks like an alligator lizard of some type.

That sure was a quick response. Thanks for the info.

but it for sure is a plated lizard. it should eat red lettuce (not ice--berg) shredded carrots, definitly mostly crickets.... good find, and good luck!

Yes. Thank you. This is a great forum. We have 3 aquatic turtles, and a pair of tiger salamanders already, so the lizard will fit right in.

Why will it fit in?
Don´t forget its a savannah dweller which needs a hot and dry environment with a moderately moist hide box in combination with bright lights (metal halides).
So quite different needs in comparsion to your animals

I meant that it will complement my collection. I needed to identify it in order to give it the correct environment. This group has been tremendously helpful. Thanks to everybody.

Yeah, that's right, good find. Because unless you live in Africa, I'm 100% positive that it was once a pet.

Hello All
Hi Ingo:
I agree with Ingo. This is a G. major major and a really nice looking specimen from the picture. What's really unusual is that this species is not as commonly imported as it used to be. The animal that is normally imported is G. major grandis Having kept both species I can say that I believe G. m. major is easier to keep than G. m. grandis. While both species fare well under controlled conditions it has been my experience that G. m. major adapt faster and are less demanding. It looks like you have a nice lizard.
Have A Great Day!!!
