Strange egg laying?

jojomonkeygirl Jun 08, 2004 06:29 PM

So a couple of weeks ago I found little white things in my dragon's cage and figured my male was a female. I increased her calcium because the eggs weren't formed well and I didn't want it to drain her. The eggs wouldn't be fertile anyway unless I am wrong about sexing my other dragon too, which is possible. I haven't seen them doing 'the nasty' but there is alot of head bobbing that goes on. ANYWAY...now I have a new egg or two every day. Is that normal? She's start scratching around every morning and I take her outside, put her in her puddle(they LOVE a clean mud puddle) and bloop...another egg. She seems to have less trouble in the water. She's not very big anyway. I was under the impression that they laid them all at once. This has been going on for two weeks. She's probably had about 25 eggs total and she doesn't try to bury them, they just stay where she drops them. Is this normal? Can anyone help me sex my other dragon? I can send pics if need be.

Man, I don't even know where to begin. You're gonna have some people blow up at you on this one. Anyway, she needs a lay box IMEADIATELY. Take a large rubbermaid and pile moist dirt on one end on a slope 10-15 inches deep and point a basking light at it. Put her in, she'll dig a tunell and lay then bury them. They are meant to lay all their eggs at once, not one a day. Post some pics and I'll help you sex them. Hold your dragon in the palm of your hand facing away from you, lift the tail up 90 degrees and just above the vent you'll see some bumps. 1 bump in the middle it's a girl, 2 bumps with a divit in the middle and it's a boy. If you can't tell, post pics of the area and someone will tell you. I'll leave the rest up to others.

it doesn't sound like you are ready to breed BDs. seperate them to start. keep in mind she can lay eggs for a year from one breeding. just because they are not together you still need to be ready for more eggs.

Heck no, I don't want to breed them. That's why I THOUGHT I got two of the same sex. I've got 12 chinchillas right now and more on the way. I can't even afford the cages to separate all of them so NO, I don't want baby dragons running around, at least not yet. Ok, so I'll do the egg laying box. Is potting soil ok as long as it has no additives/pesticides? Let me get some pics on here. I've tried looking but both look exactly the same although the unknown one is much bigger. Also, I felt aroundthe female's tummy and I can feel no eggs. She's not put on any weight and doesn't act any different but I know she's the one laying them.

I'm just a little confused. You said you thought this female was a male. Did you think you had two males? If so, if you think the other is a male, why don't you think the eggs would be fertile?

You're probably lucky they aren't both males, otherwise you might be dealing w/ serious injuries instead of a few eggs. Male dragons do not get along well at all.

We can try to help you sex them when you post pictures. Also here's a link that may help. Don't feel too bad, mistaken sexual identity is common with beardies. Hopefully you can get this all figured out now.

here's a dumb question...how do I post pics on here?

heartmountain Jun 09, 2004 02:51 PM

you have to put them in the photo gallery and then add a pic to your post and it'll bring up a list of your pics. I think there are other ways also but that ones pretty easy. If you have no intension of keeping your eggs, might be a good idea to put them in the freezer for a day before throwing them out just in case they are fertile and on the off chance that the dump would have the right incubation temps you wouldn't want them hatching there.
