Swollen front paws.... long question

rgol77 Jun 08, 2004 08:34 PM

I know this is the wrong forum, but thought I'd get more of a response here and beardies could have this same problem... so I'm wondering if anyone's bearded dragon has had a similar problem to this and how it was treated.

I have a frilled dragon with swollen front paws, a swollen back toe and a small bump in the middle of her tail (not a tail nip/bad shed/injury). She's been to the vet and the vet thinks it's gout (crystallized deposits in the joints). She's on pain meds and is getting gout medication as soon as it arrives.

I had several tests done (which were getting expensive), the vet couldn't think of anything else it could be other than gout so we're treating her for gout and will see how she responds. I'm also cutting off her vitamin supplements for a while (over supplementation is a possible cause).

Has anyone had a bearded (or frilled) dragon with gout, or similar symptoms to hers? I'm just wondering if there are other possibilities (other than gout) for her condition that the vet didn't think of.

Thanks

its important to keep your frill very hydrated. my experience is that it is not reversable but it is controlable

I had a Nigerian Uromastyx with a simular problem, he had swolen front legs and the VET said it was caused by a period of dehydration in his past (he was WC)that caused kidney failuare at one time. Even though the kidneys were working fine when I got him the Vet said they could fail at any time so I sent the Uro back to the supplier and asked for another. The supplier sent me a nice female.

Gout is not that uncommon in reptiles, and there are a few meds that are having good results when used on reptiles with gout. Here is a link to anothers thread where where we were discussing gout, medications, dosages and the last repsonse was from a Vet that has worked with reptiles with gout and some of his suggestions.

Arthritis can also have some like symptoms
