Found mystery Snake in Phnx AZ,

dvlax28 Jun 08, 2004 11:28 PM

almost got ran-over tonight. Fourtunately a swerve of the steering wheel saved his life and now I'd like to I.D. him.
I imagine he is most likely a common king snake but I've never come across one like this before, thanks in advance -Jason

That's a Banded Sand Snake (Chilomeniscus Cinctus). Pretty little snakes, glad you were able to avoid hitting it.

Yeah, it's either that or the western ground snake, Sonora semiannulata. Nice save, either way.

Yes, it could be a Western Ground Snake, they are very similar in appearance. Whats the size of this one, how long is it? Banded Sand Snakes are on the small side, 8-10 inches is about maximum.

Just so happens it is a banded sand snake. After looking at the western ground snake and seeing it lacks a white belly it must be a banded sand snake albeit a long one (14" many thanks, Jason

...and he was released in a new home, the next day since i found him, this one much further from the road :P

he was put down on the sand in a preserve and he immediately slithered under a rock pile, so i hope he is okay. he was a really cool snake and (once i found out he wasnt poisonous) he always let me hold him. this is an awesome board i'm definitely going to bookmark it for any future "pets"

but I would need to see a focused picture showing the head to be sure. It just looks too long and the head looks to Sonora like.

Pic is not too clear, but looks like a longnose (Rhinocheilus lecontei) to me...

It was definitely a banded sand snake, might have more pics coming up of a white snake my friend caught...i'm going to make him release it also
