Caring for Leopard Tortoises

Wyndham Jun 09, 2004 10:33 AM

Hello-I recently bought a leopard tortoise and I know that people say to feed them different grasses, but where do I get these grasses/plants from? Almost everywhere I go will probably use chemicals on it. Also I have heard so many stories on exactly what else to feed them and I was just wondering if someone could tell me what has/has not worked for them. I know dandelions are good, but what else?

Also I know that it says to only feed them 2 or 3 times a week, but I have been feeding him every other day and he eats a lot. Is this normal? and how much at a time do I feed him. I would say that I give him 10 small pieces of lettuce-too many or not enough??!?!?

Thanks for your help!

Don't worry about quantity if you are feeding a good variety of plant material.
These guys browse almost every waking moment if the temperatures are right. Remember that their metabolism is based on their environment. So, if it is warm and there is plenty they will be able to process more.
If it is actively eating and running around it is healthy. If it slows down look for something wrong.
As far as chemicals go, use common sense. I have a house so I've got access to weeds and grasses. I also use the local college campus for a source of weeds.
Send me your email address and I'll send you a copy of an article I have written.

Trying to keep the fun in Chelonian care

My e-mail address is vajcner@monroe.k12.mi.us.

He does kind of sleep alot-is that a problem??????? I would say that he is active for about 10 hours a day. One side of his tank has a heat lamp so it stays around 90 and then he has a big cave he usually sleeps under. I just want to make sure I am doing the right thing.

Thanks

10 hours a day is very active for a leopard. It sounds like you got it under control. There is a water dish available?
