Do any of you PAINT your Melamine

Diego Jun 09, 2004 02:54 PM

Ive searched through the old posts and have found some topics about painting the wood surfaces.. nothing about melamine.. and I know ive seen them in the old forums.

If any of you paint your melamine, can you please tell me what type of paint you use

First, I don't know of any paint that will stick but so well to melamine being as it's a very slick surface. And second, why would you want to paint them anyway? Melamine is waterproof (providing there are no cuts in it) and only needs to be sealed at the seams with a silicone caulking.

Although I suris are my passion, I do have to work to afford these beasts LOL. I am the manager of the Paint dept at the Home Depot that I work at.

Melamine is one of the hardest surfaces to paint. If you really want to do it right, follow these steps. Even then, the results are variable.

1)Lightly sand surface, try to remove all "gloss"
2)Use simple green to clean surface
3)Use a primer made by Glidden called "Gripper," if it doesn't stick . . . nothing will
4)Allow to dry for atleast one hour before applying paint
5)I would use a exterior behr paint for the cage

Hope this helps.
