TX babies hatch after only 77-80 days !!

DeanAlessandrini Jun 09, 2004 03:16 PM

I've never had a clutch hatch earlier than 90 days...and these were incubated at 76-78 F. I think the key was that I kept the humidity a bit lower than usual.

Infort...all but 5 ended up infertile, and one baby dies in egg, leaving only 4.

The good new is they are 2.2, perfect, fat little gems.

There were 2 that were speckled with cross bars two that were not, but all 4 have lots of gold on the upper ventral.

dean we're you trying to speed up the incubation or was it just happen-stance? i know that frog eggs deposited in casual/temporary water, hatch and develope incredibly quick!

DeanAlessandrini Jun 09, 2004 07:33 PM

I didn't try to speed it up...but I've noticed that with damper substrate (on easterns as well as tx) I get some swelling occasionaly on the underside of the eggs, and the shell gets a little "mushy"

The drier envoronment took care of that, the eggs stayed nice and firm, and hatched much earlier!

Congratulations! Now's the chance to try egg scent suggested earlier this year with any that don't feed well.

Actually...I'll hold off for the couperi fr scenting though.
My Texans have always taken f/t pinks right after the first shed with no scenting necessary.

That golden ventral coloration is killer!

And...4 is better than none. With Drys you just never know.

Good job.

Nice pics - Nice animals. I bred them once many years ago, and had 6 eggs, 5 hatched. But their white bars were more numerous than yours and their bellies were mostly black (no yellow). In case you're wondering: The locality of the female and male I've had were both from the lower rio grande area near Brownsville (right on the mexican border).

Good luck with them (at least these will eat fuzzies right away, unlike their eastern counterparts)

It seems we've come a long way with getting babies from easterns, but good numbers of baby texans are still elusive. It's great to hear you got some success with them. Congrats.
