which kind of humidifier? advice needed

iamjason Jun 09, 2004 07:46 PM

Impeller:
Moisture created by a centrifugal force which breaks the water into vapor

Evaporation Humidifier:
Creates invisible mist with the use of a wick filter

Ultrasonic:
Produces moisture you can see and feel, usually very quiet.

is it all personal preference or is one better than the other for use with chams? does anyone have a brand/model they would recommend? will an ultrasonic humidifier create enough tangible moisture to damage my electronics which share the room with my cham?

I bought a ultrasonic off of e-bay that works really well. It doesn't produce enough moisture to damage anything. It does raise the humidity a lot though. If you want more info on this humidifier, just ask. It ran about $40.00. I like this one b/c it has no filter to clean and it has an optional ionic air cleaner, although I'm not real sure if it does anything.

yeh if you could tell me the brand name and model id appreciate it. also, is it pretty quiet when its running?

thanks for the info!

It's called a Neotec ionic air humidifier, model XJ-750. If you do a search on e-bay, they probably still have them -it was one of those power-sellers so it is a new item and there are lots of them. I will tell you that the humidifier is pretty small -it looks bigger than it is. I have it on when my lights are on for 30 min every 3 hours, and it will run like this on high for about 2 days before refill. I rigged it with some plastic tubing and a piece of pvc so it blows in the side of the cage.

I like ultrasonics as there are no filters to replace and when used with RO or demineralized water stay quite clean. Some of the more expensive models sterilize the water with ultraviolet light which may be a good idea to keep nozzles, hoses, fittings from building up bacteria. Unless you have the spout aimed right at your electronics it shouldn't damage anything. You can aim the vapor right into the cham's cage with a piece of pvc water pipe or flexible tubing. The fog does not condense enough to supply drinking water, so remember to spray. I control the frequency and duration of fogging with a simple multiple setting lamp timer.

Hi Carlton,

Can you post a pic, or describe, how you attach the pipe to the humidifier? I have a Sunbeam that has an adjustable opening and I aim it at the ceiling which then forces it down into her cage (it's on top of the cage) For the most part it is fine but I have a "baffle" of sorts (a piece of plastic) to protect it from getting onto my MVB and if that slips I'm afraid I might damage the bulb.

thanks!

Exactly how will depend on what type of humidifier you have and the shape of the spout. Many of us use a model by Sunbeam (or Sunmark) that has a round spout on top. It takes a 2" diameter PVC water pipe just right. Take off the removable directional attachment. Put a vertical section of pipe into the top (I often put a rubber gasket around the pipe to stop fog leaks), and a pipe elbow to aim the fog horizontally into the cage. Depending on how far away the humidifier needs to sit you can add a horizontal pipe across (drill spill holes about an inch apart) or part way into the cage. The less distance the fog needs to be piped the better. I've also found a way to use flexible plastic tubing intead of pipe. But, to reduce the diameter from the 2" spout to 1" tubing (the largest I could find...maybe there are others) I needed to connect a series of pipe fittings from the vertical PVC on top of the humidifier. You can't really glue the pipe as you'll need to take it apart to clean occasionally. I think there are pics of this idea on one or two of the cham sites we usually refer people to.

wow, great! I use the same humidifier. my set up works but it is sort of convoluted so I will try your suggestions - and I will look for pix, but what you wrote makes sense - articulate as always

thanks,
