Pink scales?

hefte Jun 09, 2004 08:05 PM

I noticed that the belly scales on my sub-adult JCP are pinkish. I've never seen this before. She doesn't seem to me sick and hasn't shown any signs of being sore. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance, Eric-

Sounds like scale rot. That is usually a sign that it is too damp in the enclosure. Don't ignore it, it will get worse but you can usually rectify the matter by changing substrates and/or increasing ventilation. I've kept carpets for years and they really don't need very high humidity. Change the bedding and wait 'til it sheds and you'll probably be fine.

its possible its at the very beggining of a shed cycle, its not unheard of, or even that uncommon, for snake to develope a slight pink tint to their bellies at the beggining of a shed cycle. usually a couple of weeks before their eyes get cloudy, it doesnt always happen, but, ive seen it with quite a few species, carpets included.

however, its not to say it might not be something more concerning, Dermatitis is a possibility, and the best course to take is keeping a close eye on the situation to see if it worsens or improves, and if in doubt, make a trip to the vet. it is impossible to i.d. a problem online with very little information and no pictures to go by. so as i said, if in doubt, go to the vet.

good luck

I know that Balls often get pink bellies before shedding and it appears she is going into a shed but this has never happened before. I do keep the humidity quite high because I can hear her breath all the time. She weazes when she breathes but it never gets any worse or any better. The vet says just watch it and keep the humidity high. The ambient temp is about 80 degrees, with the basking area closer to 100, and the cool hide at about 75. I'm not sure what else i can do.

Unless the snake just recently shed, I wouldn't worry about it at all. If the snake doesn't go into a shed cycle within a week or so, then you can start to worry about scale rot, which happens when they're kept too damp or in dirty conditions.

Pinkish, Perhaps a Very Minor burn? And Closer to 100 and low 75? Id Raise the Cooler end to about 80 and lower the hot spot to about 90, Thats what I have mine as, the middle of there cages is about 85-86 depending on my room temp.

Like I said, they turn pink during the beginning of a shed cycle.

100 is not hot enough to burn anything and 75 on the cool end is fine.
