Parasites - how to treat.

bseery Jun 09, 2004 08:45 PM

I had a couple of my Collareds die recently due to internal parasites. I have no idea how they got them as all of my collareds were captive born and raised.
The vet gave all the surviving lizards a drop of Ivomec, which pretty much put them all in a coma and killed one more -- see my post on Parasites and Ivomec.
Well, I won't be having him treat the lizards any more so I have to do it my self.
I recently bought 2 males to replace those that died. I am worried as they were wild caught. They are in excellent and decently fat condition, but I still worry they may be carriers and I don't want to go through having them all die off again.
Obviously Ivomec is out, but I have been told to use Flagil or Panacur. I found Panacur powder at www.PetMeds.com, but it's for dogs and does not give a dosage for lizards.
I don't know where to get Flagil or how to dose the lizards.

How do you all have your beloved lizards taken care of ?

Your best bet is to bring to a vet specializing in reptiles, most certified avian vets are decently knowledgeable. You can't (or shouldn't) purchase and administer Flagyl or Panacur yourself because the hydration, or lack thereof, of the animal can affect the dosage. Some people use an OTC product with good results. The vet you brought the other lizzies to, was he/she a certified reptile vet? Good luck with your new males.

Yeah, I would also love to know the answer to this one! I have heard of using albon to clear internal parasites, but have not been able to find the doseage anywhere... and meanwhile, I live in an area where herp vets are just not available.

I once asked my vet if he would receive a package for me, containing a live Collared Lizard, as it was too cold outside and I had to be gone from the house. He replied, "I really don't want to, but if I don't have to touch the lizard, I'll do it, just this once."

I do know, however, where you can find these meds. Check out the link below...

I am sure you will find panacur, strongid, albon, and flagyl (also called metronidizole) there.

That is too dang strong for them. My goodness no wonder they died. Thats a shame!

They use that for cattle !

I use Parazap, I like it alot. I use it everytime I bring in a new lizard.

So Sorry about your collareds !
