Herping Jersey??

HotRodHerps Jun 09, 2004 09:36 PM

Anyone have some herping stories from New Jersey?? I know there's enough of us herpers in NJ, someone MUST have some sightings. I went out today but didn't see anything (man it's great to work in an area where you can go snake hunting during your lunch :O)

So come on, someone must have seen a pine or a milk or a watersnake???

Have you ever heard of Cattus Island Park? Its in Toms River, which is where im from. It is a huge nature/wildlife park which has everything from fresh water ponds to salt water marshes. I walk around there sometimes and have seen the following so far this year. 2 box turtles, 4 painted turtles, 6 GIANT snappers ( pic is below), 2 water snakes, 1 black snake (not sure what kind), and a bullfrog.

have fun.

Never heard of it but I'll surely check it out. I'm in Bridgewater, north a ways, but I will be going to the pine barrens (most weekends) this summer so I'll check out. Thanks.

Oh, and did the black snake look anything like this? Black racer. Supposed to be common enough though I haven't seen one myself.

Yup! That black snake was it. It had a slight greenish gray mark under its neck like in those pics.

Thanks....If you are ever near cattus island shoot me an email.

Will do man.

I had a pair of racers a few years ago that I picked up at a show for 5 bucks a piece. Those things made mambas seem calm by comparison. Sharp looking snakes though. Almost intelligent.

Happy herping and don't forget to send pics if you find anything!

:O)

I have been herping in NJ Pine Barrens this year in early May. I seen a few racers,ONE milk snake,a few garter snakes and a few turtles. I was mainly looking for eastern king snakes but didn't see any. I haven't seen any copper heads as I tend to stay away from the regions where they hang out.

I live in PA and most likely will do some herping in PA this Saturday. Actually I am calling my cuz tonight cause she is a biology major and has been on MANY herping trips in NJ. Maybe she will give me a few pointers. I'll post some pics if I see anything.
