Need list of Toxic outdoor plants...

Lyn Jun 09, 2004 09:47 PM

I have found lots of lists of what it good to feed Tortoises, but have not come across a list containing outdoor plants to keep them away from. My back yard has grass, dandelions, clover, wild carrot (aka Queen Anne's Lace) and a wild violet that smells of mint. Will it be safe for me to let my Tortoise graze back there? Will she know what is ok and what is bad? I plan to buy the Tortoise seed mix if I can find the site again, and plant that back there. I am mostly concerned about the minty violet plant because there is a lot of it back there. I wish I knew what it was called. It has roundish leaves and small purple flowers, the mint smell is strong if you mow it or crumble it in your fingers. I live in the Buffalo NY area. I use no fertilizer, pesticide, or weed killer.

Thank you for the site. I did not see any wild violets or wild mint on there. So do you think it's ok if she eats them? I won't pick/feed them to her but she will come across them while grazing.

here's a list of some safe, edible flowers for humans... i figure that if i can eat it, my tort can. mine sometimes likes grazing on the violets in my backyard when i take him out for a walk/crawl!

They aren't Jump Ups, I've had those before. Here are some pictures of it. It spreads like mad, it covers the back 1/3 of my yard completely (no grass grows there, this works as a ground cover and blocks out everything else). A few dandelions pop up through it, and some Queen Anne's Lace. I've let it spread, it's pretty, and I don't have to mow the lawn where it is. I figured eventually it would cover the entire yard, but now that I'm getting my tortoise I'll have to rethink that plan and maybe try to stop this plant from taking over any more of the yard.

Here is what the little flowers look like...
