gopherlover Jun 18, 2003 10:58 PM

Hey guys its me again!!!! Everything is goin great with my sd gopher!!!! It feeds on 1 common mouse twice a week and is doing fine!!!! Now that everything is situated I am looking for a captive bred sd gopher(first i gotta sex mine). So now since my current sd is wild I need some suggestions on sexing the snake and how to get rid of any parisites that is may have. Next time the snake craps I'll take is to the vet to get it checked. So... my questions simply put are:
1) How will I cure any parisites?
2) How do i sex the snake?
3) Any body know of any good sd gopher breeders that have normal patterned snakes for sale that are already 2-3 years old?
PS: As soon as I figure out my digital camera I'll post some rewarding pics of the terraium and my snake. Thanx!!!!

1. The vet will give you some meds for the snake if there are parasites present, He will probably give the first dose in his office, then you will give the snake one or two more doses, then bring another fecal sample back for a follow-up check. the follow up is very important, so don't blow it off....a lot of people do. What med depends on what parasite. In general, Panacur (Fenbendazole)for roundworms, pinworms, hookworms and strongyloids and some protozoans....Droncit (Praziquantel) for tapeworms (Droncit is usually injectible so he won't likely send that home with you).... Albon (Sulfadimethoxine)for Coccidia....and Flagyl (Metronidazole) for most protozoans.

2. Have someone probe your snake to sex it. Most people with some experience can just look at them and tell with a fair degree of accuracy, but short of x-raying the snake, probing is the most reliable when done by an experienced person. It can be dangerous to the snake if done incorrectly, so if you aren't sure about the person doing it...don't. Find someone that you are confident knows what they are doing. It not a difficult procedure, so get that person to teach you how.

I can't help you with your final questions...sorry. Try watching the classifieds on this site under colubrids.
