Worrywart question and a story to share...

happycrook Jun 09, 2004 11:14 PM

Is it normal for my approx. 8 month old snow corn to not eat for over a week? She last ate on the 1st and shows absolutely no interest in the pinkies. She is a huge contrast to my GBK snake who will eat almost anything that moves. I'm just a huge worry wart... she ate 11 days apart before and she was fine. So thank you for putting up with my novice worrying.

Also, a story to share...Nessy, my snow corn, decided tonight that my shirt pocket is a really cool place to curl up!!! I had her out earlier and she's now been in my pocket for over 2 hours now! Every so often she pokes her head out to check things out then, POP, right back in! Very funny!

Thanks again

Cool story, that would make a cute picture. I wouldnt worry about your snake just yet. Mine usually do eat every week but we skip meals every now and again and they are just fine. Im sure shell be fine. And my GBK goes nuts when its feeding time. Its like he just gapes his mouth and starts following my hand around the cage.

Becki,
I would definitely not worry. There are so many factors that could trigger a nonfeeding response. Whenever one of my snakes skips a meal, I always think about how spoiled they are in comparison to snakes in the wild. Most snakes in the wild do not have the luxury of receiving convenient meals once per week. Survival of the fittest is always in the back of my mind when thinking of a snake's life in the wild. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if most snakes in the wild only eat one big meal per month or longer. Also, could the snake be getting ready to shed? Or maybe it was a bad mouse? One time I had a whole batch of frozen mice that NONE of my snakes would eat. To this day I do not know what could have caused such a strange phenomena but I suspect it was due to purchasing mice (that could have been lab mice) from an unknown source at a local herp show. I would wait 3 days and try feeding your snake again. I tell ya what, I wish I had your luck with my gray banded king experience. I've since given up on keeping them since feeding them took so much time away from the rest of my collection.
GOOD LUCK!

she needs a bigger meal. At 8 months, pinkies are probably too small and don't offer enough nutrition.

Keep the "same size as the thickest part of the snake" rule in mind. It may not be worth the effort for her to mess with a pinky mouse.

Hope it helps. Best wishes.
