just hatched: baby albino with pure red eyes!!!!!

Pauline Jun 10, 2004 05:50 AM

I know that blazing blizzards have red eyes... but is it unusual for albinos to have pure red eyes (all of the albinos I have and have seen before have some sort of pigment in their eyes and red veins).. I have just hatched a very pale tremper albino yesterday and was surprised to see that it has pure red eyes with no pigmentation at all.

Thanks for any replies

I have 1 photo.. it's not too good as I took it in dim conditions without flash (doing otherwise would not have been very kind since the poor thing is obviously very sensitive to light).. I will post it later today.. In the meantime I would be interested to hear if anyone else has hatched baby albino leos with pure red eyes..

Best wishes,
Pauline

Albino hatchlings normally have red eyes. But congratulations on the new baby. It's always a nice feeling.

all the albino leos and babies I've seen so far, and those of other people I know always have some sort of pigmentation in their eyes and red veins... not pure red eyes... maybe I'm wrong, but I've never seen anything like this one before.. you know the red eyes that blazing blizzards have? that's the type of pure red eye I mean--- I dont think that's usual for an albino?

I'll get that photo up shortly..

Best wishes,
Pauline

yes... I've posted the photo now, I think that's what it looks like.

What strain of albino is that you have? I was always under the impression that albino leos had some pigment in their eyes and red veins- not pure red eyes, but your's obviously does... is that unusual? or have I led a sheltered life?

Pauline

This pic was actual not a good representation of that leo's eyes(it's a Tremper). I took this pic at night, under a red light with the flash on. So, I guess the combination of the lighting and angle made it look like they eyes were really red. Plus I think the pupil was very big in this pic, since it was pretty dark. In reality, this leo's eyes look like most albinos, light gray color, with pink/red veins.

ah... your description is how I expect albino leos eyes to look (yellow or greyish with pink veins).. but as you can see from the photo, the baby I hatched had pure red eyes..

bear in mind, its not that good as I took it in very dim conditions so he didn't get uncomfortable with the light!

and here's another photo of one of my adults... if you look at her eye, she clearly has pigment! on close inspection I can see red veins though.

All the other albino babies I've hatched have had this type of pigmentation too, which is why I surprised by the one with red eyes.

Cheers,
Pauline

Hi. So you're Paulie of the Gecko Spot. I love your site!!!

Anywho, I'm kinda glad you brought this up. Every since I got my albinos, I've had this little theory and have called them 'dirty albinos'. To me an albino need to have the white on pink with red eyes, not the whole greyish-yellow mix. I guess you can say that your babie is a 'high quality' albino as compared to some of the others floating around which are 'dirty'.

Congradulations on the new baby. I think its pretty awesome!

Baby Albinos are born with solid red/pink eyes, that is normal. after about 2-3 weeks they will develop pigment in them that you are used to seeing. The amount of red that stays in them depends on the strain, etc. Their eyes are extremely sensitive at this young age.

Thanks all

hmmm.. well, I learn something new I've hatched out a few of these little guys and all the previous ones had pigmented eyes... probably it will be more comfortable for him if he gets some pigment in his eyes since he will be less sensitive to light, I'll watch his eye development with interest..

Guess they all get "dirty" after a few months. Like my neighbor who came over to show me his pink and cream red-eyed albino hatchling(Tremper)a few months ago. Now he calls it "UPS brown", some call them "chocolate albinos". After him almost drowning my three year old "dirty" RW breeders with drool I gave him a hatchling. Hmmm...red contact lenses?

CoolGecko Jun 10, 2004 03:03 PM

It will losse the red eye in few weeks and it is very common in Tremper Albino to have them when they are hatchling and offent they will losse it. Color of eye in Tremper line are not genetic and they are just random.
