30 CFM fan installation

moorej7 Jun 10, 2004 05:56 AM

Has anyone used one of these PC fans for their enclosures?

I have read messages in the past about installing a @30 cfm fan typically used for a computer in dart frog terrariums to reduce condensation. I'm unable to find the old messages.

My questions specifically is how to wire it.

Thanks,

Jerod

I'll give this a shot, I did some homework on wiring a thermostat so I have a small understanding. First, what is the volttage of the fan, if it is 120v it will be easy. Buy a cord blank, and wire it to the terminals. If the fans volttage is other than 120 you need a transformer. That is where it gets complicated. Your best bet is get a fan that runs on 120v, I would think you could purchase these at a radio shack. In which case the folks there could give you some help om wiring as well. Goodluck, Clint

i could not find any 120 volt fans.
And i wasn't too worried about humidity drops.
So i got a used AC to DC adapter that matched my fans, which were 12 volt.

Finding these adapters at a garage sale would definately be your best bet.

Anyway... the adapter was 12volt .5amps and my fans were 12volt .15 amps. SO i just wired the fans in with each other using the standard molex computers then i cut the small connector that usually goes in a cellphone or cd player off of the adapter and "taped" the two wires to the molex conector using liquid electrical tape.

Had this thing running months... no problems.

Radio shack sell them in a 3" & 4" case fan that are 120v

you will have two small wires leading off your fan they hook up will not matter on these wires as long as one is wired to the white ( neutral wire) and the other is wired to your ( black 120v/ hot wire) Nof for these to perate on a thermostat you will need a sloid state thermostats not a pulse proportional so a ranco or the new johnson control would be the choice id make and of those two the new johnson controls unit id fabtabulous!!.

To wire it into the JC tstat is rather simple to do you will follow the instruction with the unit and wire the fan off of the load side of the tstat you in coming power to the tstat will wire as follows .

120vac------------to 120vac terminal

I tried one of the radio shack fans, but I thought it produced too much vibration. It's not a variable speed (couldn't find one) so a dimmer didn't help. Is there a 120v variable speed case fan?
