weird eggbound question

pweaver Jun 10, 2004 07:35 AM

I have a female honduran that's gravid. She dropped 5 good eggs and then didn't lay anymore, even though it was apparent there were more eggs left. I waited a day and then tried to help her move the one closest to the vent. I've done this before with success, but she was kind of weird in that the egg seemed smaller than usual, and just didn't feel right. I couldn't make any progress with it even though it was less than an inch from the vent. So I put her in a container with about an inch of water in it and left her overnight. This morning I found that she expelled a single egg. It was only about 1.5 inches long, and hard as a rock. It looked more like a BM than an egg, but it was clearly an egg. I returned her to her lay box to work on the rest of the eggs herself.
Has anyone else ever had an egg layed that looked like this?

Paul,

I've had almost the same scenario as yours a few years ago and theorized (sp!) that the small dried up egg my female hondo had was a slug she had retained from the previous year.

Someone else replied that it was a calcified egg. This was the first year that I bred this female and she's having all kinds of problems. She was plenty big enough. After dropping the calcified egg, the other 3-4 seem to be held up. These feel like normal eggs but they are probably slugs. What a pain.
