potting soil... good or bad?

spottedragon Jun 10, 2004 08:52 AM

For a substrate I put down dark colored tiles for my leo. I used peat moss to put inbetween the cracks so crickets wouldn't get through and she couldn't hurt herself on sharp edges. Well, one day I noticed her cage smelt pretty bad. I started cleaning it out when I lifted up the tile and as many as eight crickets lay dead there. They got through so now I have compacted potting soil to fill the cracks. It has the little white thingies in it... is this okay for my 2 month old leo? If not, what should I fill the cracks with? I can't get a better fitting tile because i have a little plug in the bottom for wire, you know, like in a terrarium.

I personally wouldn't use potting soil to fill in the cracks. If the cracks are small enough, use sand as a grout. I use that for some of my aquarium housed geckos and they can't eat the sand when I feed them since it is only in the cracks.

A lot of potting soils are high in nitrates for growing plants, amongst other chemicals. So, I really wouldn't suggest using it.

Try what I suggested above and see if that works for you a little better.

A little bit of sand in the cracks will work just fine.
