Wheezing....

Amk2109 Jun 10, 2004 09:28 AM

Hi there. I have a male beardie that recently started wheezing a little bit. Most of the time I notice it when I go to pick him up but occasionally I will hear him when he gets ready to run around. I have not had a beardie with this before. Since I am asthmatic I have much experience with wheezing sounds but none of my beardies have ever done this. I am more than happy to take him to the vet but I just wanted to see if anyone had any thoughts. Thanks!!!

Could be a resperatory infection. I'd take it in and have it checked out.

I would take him to the vet for a check up. It sounds like a respitory tract infection. Maybe something is irritating his air ways. What kind of substrate are you using?

We use a wheat bran substrate in all the lizards cages. We have been using it for years and I have never noticed this problem. I am going to go ahead and get him in. If it is an infection I certainly don't want to waste any time. If it turns out to be his substrate then we will have to figure something else out. I don't use sand because of impaction. He has enough problems with his bowels and that is why I switched to the bran. I hate to not be able to use something that they can dig in because they LOVE to dig. They spend hours each day digging around. Thanks for the help.
