Tree Frogs and Dart Frogs in the Same Vivarium

mcliffor Jun 10, 2004 10:28 AM

I('ve had some practice with Dendrobates tinctorius and am thinking of expanding to red-eyes tree frogs. Is it possible to keep Agalychnis callidryas and Dendrobates ssp. together in a large arboreal vivarium? Thanks

This is not a good idea. They have somewhat different humidity requirements and there would be both space and food competition that would stress both genera. The so-called terrestrial darts will also utilize the higher reaches of a vivarium, especially when young. The smaller arboreal thumbnails may be small enough to get eaten by a tree frog. This would be pretty expensive fodder.

Each kind is usually very entertaining in pairs or small groups of the same species. Galacs, auratus, vents, fantasticus, imitators, leucomelas are among those that get along well in groups, although imitator females will fight and mess up each other's eggs, so breeding isn't always successful with more than 1 pair. I think P. terribilis is also a good frog in groups of the same speci, but have no first hand experience with these yet. Others like the tincs, azureus are best in pairs. Pumilios are better off in pairs or in a very large tank where they can establish separate territories, command their own bromelaids, where they can't see each other. Read some more about them all before you consider mixing species at all. In the long run, you probably won't want to do it.
