painted vs. RES?

periwinklewalnut Jun 10, 2004 11:39 AM

I currently have 2 RES...they are a little over a year old. I enjoy them tremendously and was going to get two more but then I thought it might be great to get something different. I'm curious about how differnet the care is for RES and painteds? Would you say it's pretty much the same or what are the types of differences? Do painteds, like RES, need the UVA/B lights, basking areas out of water, a heater on the tank...etc. My two RES are currently in a 55 gallon tank. I have a 20gl tank that has all the old filters, lights, heaters etc in it that i used previously for the RES until they got to big. I want to start raising the turts now because I like having them from hatchlings and ideally in a few years I'll have a pond and then they will be big enough to go in it. Any info would be grand :D

Care is pretty much identical. The only real differnce is painteds stay a bit smaller and like more animal matter in their diet. RES diets should be about 60% (if not more) plant matter when they are adults.

As the other person said they are smaller than RES's. So this means they will fit in the 55 gal tank when they get bigger. The 55 gal does not seem big enough for two adult RES's though. I would move them to the pond and keep the Painteds in the 55 gal.

I ideally wanted to put the RES and the painteds in the pond. Is this not a good idea? Might they not get along?

Oh I don't know. Some do and some don't. But how big will the pond be? To fit 4 turtles, 2 or them being huge RES's, I just don't think there will be enough room for them all to get along nice. If they don't have enough room, then yes they will fight. They will fight for territory.

Please someone correct me if I am wrong. I am just stating what I have been told over the years.
