Anything that could possibly be eaten is not good for iguanas...newspaper, paper towels, linoleum, and repticarpet are the suggested materials....good luck....Lyn

I have heard that some types of bark or mulch( as long as it can't be ingested)is ok, but some types cause chemical burns. I don't remember where I read that so maybe someone else has an idea about it. I have used rabbit food as bedding because it's ok fo them to eat. My iggys haven't even tried to eat it. I am using indoor outdoor carpet right now. It's a little harder to clean, but it works ok.

I feel like I should add to this thread that Grass (and I guess other iguanas) will go so far as to eat dirt when given the chance. So if the bedding is small enough to fit in their mouths, it's probably not a good idea.

All my iggys eat dirt when I bring them outside. I have no idea why. I don't have a problem with them eating other stuff though. They don't eat their fake plants or the rabbit food bedding. Which is kinda weird.

i keep mine on cypress mulch. have been for the last 4-5 yrs. no ill effects. i have seen her eat smaller pieces while she is chowing her greens. they pass through her no prob. bigger pieces she spits out. also kept my monitors on the cypress and they too had no probs. stay away from the artifical grass. they are hard to clean and harbor bacteria to good.

Sam-N-Ella Jun 10, 2004 09:07 PM

I'll keep that in mind. I sthat like indoor/outdoor carpet? Because that is what I'm using.

no offense phantom, but your info is wrong. cypress fumes can kill reptiles.... mulch can cause impaction. just because your iguana doesnt eat it doesnt mean any others cant.

p.s. indoor/ outdoor carpet is easy to clean. hose off, make a bleach solution (1 part bleache 9 parts water) and pur it on, then hose off agian. u also dont need to change the capet everyday if they dont poop on it.

Cedar fumes can kill.. not Cypress.. Cypress doesn't give off much of a smell really. I use Cypress mulch for my snakes and mixed with soil for my Savannah Monitor. Always have... always will...

As to one of the other posts of why Iguana's will eat dirt..There are 2 possible reasons. 1.. is trace minerals they may need in their diet that they can get from dirt. 2.. in their native habitat there are probably a lot of plants that have mild toxins...and like parrots from the amazon, they may make use of the dirt as a neutralizing agent for these toxins...its instinctive so they'll do it even when their diets don't contain those kinds of compounds and alkaloids.
