Making thermostat controls...

kane65 Jun 10, 2004 01:03 PM

Does anyone have any experience with these? I've always bought the thermos & reheos. I just started putting together my own rheos but I have no idea how to put together a thermostat controller from home depot parts.... Any suggestions?

I'm not using a thermostat yet. I'd like to be able to put together my own & wanted to get help from anyone who has done it.

Thanks

I tried this awhile ago, the cost would be comparable to an 75 dollar ranco. The termostats that are available run on 24v which means a transformer is also necessary. I never did get one to work. Nor could I find someone knowledgeable enough to help me out. Your best bet is to buy one, take it apart and see what makes it tick. Goodluck Clint

Yes, the more I look into it the lest the savings seem.

Of these two while the ranco isa formadible thermostat i would go with the new Johnson control unit, they are much smaller and still pack the power of the ranco and have a few extra features the ranco doesnt the one is a green LED that shows you at a glance the unit is doing its job , it also has one that allows you to set a malfunction range if ever the problem arises you can control the length of time it does so. the cost isnt alot more for the extra added features , check out D&S reptiles in the classifieds he has them and is a very good guy to deal with and super nice . it will also run your fan as neededalong with ALOT of heating devices.

You need a 110VAC-to-24VDC transformer, a 24VDC coil relay, and any wall thermostat from Home Depot or otherwise, plus proper wire and knowledge. All AC connections must be touch-safe, which means you'lll need an enclosure. I made a circuit board for mine. Alot of work for something that you can just buy.

A Ranco or similar thermostat is functionally just as good but actually better because it has a probe and is more compact than what you would make. You're really not saving enough money making your own where it is worth not buying a manufactured product.
