????? about shipping usps

flammingcat Jun 18, 2003 11:52 PM

I live in a little town anytime I have ever shipped a lizard or tortoise, I have shipped from the post office, with the words LIVE REPTILE all over the box, I did this yesterday 6/17 and today neither person I shipped to got them.....so I'm on the phone ALL day looking for them (some of them post office people are very rude!!!!!!) anyhow, I had no luck, they just kept saying they are in transit, 1 person was doing a search for them, how ever when I called 2 hrs later they had no record of this being done, so it started all over, finally the man who was expecting the tortiose got ahold of the postmaster in clevland Ohio, he was telling this man, I did not ship overnight!!! well I had my receipt, saying NEXT DAY BY NOON, I called the man, he told me then my post office messed up, that since sept 11th, NO LIVING ANIMAL goes out next day, because they are shipped by comercial flight...does anyone know of anything like this???? Believe it or not the man tracked down his tortoise at an airport 45 mins away from him, he went there and picked him up, the other person, still hasn't recieved her dragon....I stayed on the phone all day with the 800 # they still don't know where either package is...well I thought I would share my experience with everyone...CROSS YOUR FINGERS for the baby dragon...

I have heard from several people on this forum and through reading a little bit about it that what you stated is correct. The US Post office does not overnight them.. you would be better off shipping out via UPS or Airborne.. some people mark on their Live Reptiles, some don't... but if you setup an account with them for free.. you can get away with it.

G'luck.

i have received from airborn express a few times now and they have been really great, although last time i had a dragon shipped to me via them, the person had to mark it as a turtle as they dont ship lizards??? weird as so many people use them to ship dragons.. anyhow.. they are quite reliable....in my experience anyhow

Yea, I normally use airborne.. i've shipped out about 50 dragons so far this year and have used them all except twice when a "customer" specifically requested UPS.. i've had no problems with either carrier and all dragons arrived safe and alive.

It really depends on where you are at.. technically, I've been told by Airborne that they do not allow live animals at all.. some say they allow turtles, some say frogs, some say lizards... the key to shipping them is not to focus on what's inside the box lol. If you just ship it and don't say "Hey i have a dragon inside" you should be okay... i use big white boxes that say Perishable all over them, and i have them picked up at my location so the driver could careless what's inside. Never once been asked "why are their airholes in here??"

BTW, Reiko your dragons are awesome.

last year, and not the next day, nor the day after that, but the day after that, the lil guy showed up on my doorstep. When she gets her dragon just be sure she hydrates him well, strawberry gatorade is a great thing for this, and be sure she gets him under his lamps straight away, and let the lil guy warm up. Hopefully the little fellow gets there, please do let us know, i know how hard it can be waiting like this, not knowing where he is.............

this is Carrick, lil guy who got lost for 3 days......

I bought three dragons from breeders in another state and two of the dragons was shipped UPS, and I received them the very next day. The breeder provided me with a tracking number and I was able to follow there travels via the internet. The other breeder sent the third dragon via USPS priority mail and I received him two days latter. However I was given a tracking number and was able to follow its travels also. The third dragon was dehydrated badly upon arrival and it took three days of warm soaks and tendering loving care to get him up on his feet. I will be getting two more shipped from California next week through UPS. I even ordered my last two big tanks and they were shipped UPS and received them within 3 days. So sometimes it is the next day and then on others it is days before you receive the merchandise. Hope the little makes it soon.
