inter breeding ?

the-mikester Jun 19, 2003 12:03 AM

is it bad to inter-breed? i read some posts on it and they said it was like a 1 in 100 thing that you have deformities from it. so would you say it would be ok or not? or is this one of those personal preferance things...

bad pic^

1 in 100 is alittle off..

ive been breeding my rats for 4 years and all my animals are related in one way or another..

lately ive been getting several baby rats with only 1 eye.. or 1 smaller deformed eye.. needless to say its time i got some fresh blood into my colony.

i bred brother X sister for 10 generations before i saw any noticable deformities..

best of luck

I have a question:

So what about litter size. Did in-breeding affect your litter sizes or no? That is one of my concerns regarding in-breeding. I wouldn't want the litter sizes to be small.

Thanks in advance.

Assuming your talking about rodents, it's O.K. All of my rats are the offspring of my first pair. If you have animals that are producing well and healthy, and they produce animals that are productive and healthy, there is no need to bring in 'new blood'. Many strains of rodents have hundreds of generations of inbreeding and are stable. If you do decide to bring in new animals, quarantine them in a seperate place until you're sure they are O.K.

Yes, you can breed mother-son, father-daughter many, many times before you have to worry about a problem with feeders.
