future gecko owner with questions!

tyrel Jun 10, 2004 04:19 PM

hey everybody,

Im hoping to get a leopard gecko but have a few very impoertant questions.

1. I live on vancouver island, and every year my family takes a trip to a small village(also on vancouver island) for the summer. It a hot three hour car drive on logging roads, then a two hour cold bumpy boat ride.We stay there two months, but only have limited electricity(a Generator). We also have a wood stove to warm the house. Is there anyway that a leopard gecko could make it though the trip and the two month stay safely?

2. I was checking out petshops today to take a look at some of the geckos. One was keeping them on sand, so i wont want to buy from there. The other is a great petshop,(they just spent $500 on an operation for a moniter!). they had a bunch of juvinile geckos, but they were very delicate and jumpy. they also had two adults, a breeding pair. they were very nice, calm and easy to handle, but they were on hold for someone else. What is the best age to get a gecko that is easy to handle and tame?

Well it would be a good idea to just leave the gecko at home with a person to take care of it instead of putting it through all that.As for the best age that would all depend on the gecko. Some adults are very untame and so are babies. Its best to have a gecko from when it was young in my opinion more fun to watch grow etc.

Hey i live in Richmond BC and i travel from richmond to the Sunshine Coast which is a half-one hour drive depending on traffic, a 45 min LOUD ferry ride, then another 30min drive. They make it fine, they dont' enjoy it of course but they're fine and eating as soon as i set them down.

Of course if you don't have to take them that's the best idea, but they're really not that fragile. But they do need a good source of heat, if you're in a cabin i know they can get cold at night. That would be your only problem having a generator running all night for some heat pads :P

I also agree with the previous post, babies are so much more fun cuz you train them and watch them grow up. You definately shouldn't take your baby leos on the trip though, it might stress them too much. Sorry if this is long. Email me if you have more questions
