What do gravid BRBs look like?

Jeff Clark Jun 10, 2004 09:10 PM

. I took PICs this evening of some of my gravid BRBs. All of these snakes have palpable lumps and have been off feed except for a few small meals since they were last bred in late january and february. These first four are all 3 to 5 year old females that are not real big and so they show more than the older larger ones. BTW, I checked temperatures with the raytek and all of the gravid snakes in these PICs were 83 and 84 degrees. The non-gravid BRBs were 78 and 79 degrees tonight.

. This one is 4 years old. I hope you can see in these first PICs how the snakes look very large in the aft part of their bodies compared to their smaller heads which are typical of younger adults.

...This is an older larger snake and you can see that she is large in the aft end compared to the rest of her body.

>>...This one was born here 8 years ago. She is large enough that she does not show like the other ones. She has 22 palpable lumps and acts gravid.

>>>>...The snake that is opaque in this PIC is a big 6 year old. She has been large in the middle since she was bred. It is hard to tell whether she is gravid or not. The smaller yellowish snake under her is an import I got as an adult in 1992. She is not gravid this year. The larger opaque one sort of looks like she has an ovulatory lump still so I put a male in with her last week. The male is one of my old breeder males in the water bowl.
This cage is a very old melamine that has permanent stains on the walls and floor.

If the foremost BRB expert has trouble with his '18 ' breeders, then we're all doomed!

You're gonna have lots of fun little ones running around soon!

Best of luck to you.

Jeff,
Are warmer temps available to your gravid BRB's? Those pics make me drool. How are the Peruvians doing?

Paul,
. The cage temps are the same for all the adult BRBs. The gravid ones seem to take advantage of the warmer parts of the cages and keep their body temperatures warmer. The Peruvian Rainbows look like a bust for this year. The female that looked and acted gravid is now eating regularly and has no palpable lumps. The same female laid a big pile of slugs last year. I never saw PRBs mating this year but the male left plenty of deposits on the cage furniture. My second male PRB should be mature next year and perhaps he will fix whatever the problem is.

Thanks, Chris
