Deposits on cage

musashai Jun 10, 2004 10:57 PM

I just got a baby (3-4 month old) gold tegu. When i got it i had to some rearranging with the cages and i had to break out the old 29gal tank that used to house saltwater fish to house my crested's. The problem is that there is a what seems to be a calcium deposit film on the inside of the tank. I have tried EVERYTHING under the blue moon to get it off. Vinegar, bleach, soap and water, dish soap, scraping it with a razor blade and scraping it with a paint scraper. The only thing I havent tried is CLR (Calcium Lime Rust remover) but I was advised against this and it probably wouldnt work anyway. Anyway i would like to know what the heck i can do because the tank looks horrible but i dont have another $40 to spend on a 29gal cuz i just spent a lot setting up the tegu's cage >.< Any help is much appreciated.

I don't really have a suggeston except to not waste your money on CLR. I tried it a couple of years ago on some fish tanks and it didn't work very well. Maybe a product specifically made for cleaning marine tank glass? I know I've seen them in the stores.

Try some muriatic acid (you can find this at home depot or other hardware store ) this is what they use for the fish tanks at the lab I work at (the kind you find at the store is more diluted but should work). Just be careful, preferribly do it outside or at least in a very well ventilated area and use gloves. Good luck!

South Florida has some of the hardest water I have ever seen . We get mineral deposits on just about anything the water touches . These are a couple things I use to clean them up around the house .

Paste made of white vinegar and baking soda , let it stand, then scrub with a tooth brush and rinse well .

When that doesn't work this usually will

Mix 1 teaspoon Calgon in per gallon water, let is sit , scrub with a tooth brush or one of those scouring pads made to clean teflon pans , rinse well

I saw a commercial for Lime Away this mooring. I have never used it but you might try it. the commercial said it was far better then CLR. Might be worth a try.
