My little king is in his first shed, few questions inside.

TGizzle Jun 11, 2004 09:21 AM

The king I bought about a month ago has been eating really well (2 pinkies a week) and has been a great little snake but he's in his first shed. He got the skin off of his head and about 1/2" behind his head but the rest of his skin remains. He got the head skin off by using a piece of nice hollowed driftwood in his cage. It's been 3 days since he did that and the rest of his skin is still on. Should I just give him time to shed it off or give him some assist (I read somewhere to use a small tupperware conatiner and get some really wet spagnum moss and cut a small whole in the top). Is this acceptable for kings or should I just let him do his thing? It's been fairly humid here but I have the air conditioner on. Thanks...

I used that humid hide as a way to help my BP and RoughScaled sand boa with thier first difficult sheds. My Kenyan Sand Boa gets a humid hide whenever I see him in shed. So I don't see how it would harm a King.

I recommend a humidity box like the other poster said. The easiest thing to use is a deli dish or some other small container with a lid. Cut an appropriate sized hole in the side of the cup and make sure there are no sharp or pointed edges.(I use sandpaper to file it down). You can use damp paper towel or moss and place it inside the container. Make sure it's not soaking wet! My king snake spends a few mins a day in his container(I leave my container in his tank all the time). Just make sure you change the moss/paper towel once every 2-3 days or so to avoid bacteria build up.
