Sick monitor....help...

savvgawd Jun 11, 2004 04:06 PM

I know the first thing everyone will say is take it to a vet. I have held off on this because the nearest reptile vet(over an hour away) is not experienced with monitors at all. My blackthroat has become very sluggish and non respondent. He hasnt even eaten in over a week regardless of offering food everyday. My first guess is that he is constipated. He ate a very large meal of raw ground turkey, eggs, cooked chiken, and calcium. After that all the bad stuff began. I later took him out to roam my bathroom and he pooped the moest I've ever seen. I took him out again and he did the same thing. He doesnt move much in his cage, even to get onto his basking spot. His usual response to me taking him out is tail whips and hissing. Now when i take him out he plays dead. I'm very worried and considering driving many hours to a good vet. In the mean time any help oin this is needed and appreciated.

Temps- ambient, basking and cool side? Is your water container large enough for it to submerge its body into? What type of enclosure are you offering it? Screentop? What have you changed in the recent past as far as your husbandry? How old is your monitor? Whats your usual diet if not what you stated in your post? If you can answer these questions truthfully then maybe someone here will be able to guesstimate at what could possibly be wrong. Its really hard without actually seeing your monitor so please offer as much info as you can.

this issue is beyond my experience, could be a number of things but if i had to choose it would only be an assumption/oppinion which in this case would probably be of no help. So this is where i bow out an allow the more experienced step in. Sorry could help in this situation but if you have to drive for an hour please, get it to a vet!

Are all limbs working properly? If not which ones, rear or front? Tounge flicking good? How are the eyes looking? If hes crapping he might not be constipated. Anything out of the ordinary you did lately?

I would take it to the vets straight away i have had a few rescues that exhibited the same symptoms and they didn't last to long.
