What is Pyramiding?

What is pyramiding? I know it has to do with a turtle's shell but what is it and how does a turtle's shell become like a pyramid? Thanks!

Pyramiding is what happens when a turtle grows quickly and its scutes do not shed properly. The scutes build up on top of each other making them tall in the center of each scute, which looks kind of like little pyramids all over the turtles shell. A turtle that is cared for properly will have a smooth surface to its shell. Turtles that are overfed or fed too much protein will have a bumpy or "pyramid" shell. It is not reversable.
