Is it okay to lift the hide directly off of the snake?

I'm trying to think like a snake. I'm in a cozy little hiding spot and all of the sudden, I realize it isn't so safe and suddenly I feel so insecure. Wherever I am, I can always get touched. AHHHH!!!

Luckily our snakes do not have that kind of thought process. You and I might avoid an area that we thought was safe only to find out it was not. The snake on the other hand, sees a perfectly suitable hide spot each time, no matter how many times you lift the top off of him/her.
Cognitive thought is just not possible on the Corn Snake level.

Thank goodness, but also a bummer... I've had my baby corn for a week now & she's always hiding in this tree decoration I have in her cage. Tonight I poked & prodded trying to get her out of it, but never succeeded. I put another hide in that area, hoping she'll feel it's safer than the one I poked at her in. If I can't get her out of there, I can't get her used to handling...

solution: remove the tree decoration and leave the other hide in.

I did, thanks. After I prodded her last night, I put a 2nd cool side hide in there & left her alone in the dark. W/in an hour, she'd moved out of the tree, so I removed it. Some of these hides are great if they're in the wild, but don't allow you to get to them to handle & tame them here in captivity.
