Human Heat pad as UTH, need feedback

Noodle_Boy Jun 11, 2004 06:49 PM

Hello, I remember reading about a few people hear a while ago that used human head pads as UTH's for their enclosures. Seeing as the prices for reptile UTH's are horrible, I decided to try out this idea for my new 20 gallon long. Before setting it up however, I would like to know if there are any horrendous downsides to this. Possitive feedback would be great too. Thanks

I've heard people using human heat pads with success, but I still perceive it as a big fire hazard. They weren't designed to run 24/7 let alone have a tank resting on top of them.

Why don't you try ordering a UTH online? reptildirect.com and petguys.com have them for pretty cheap.

i used this for my boa tank once. xelda is right about the fire hazert. if you put something uder the tank to make sure the tank isnt resting on the cord, and you check the pad to make sure it is fine every singel day, then go for it. but i would suggest just goin for the UTH, they last longer.

I use human heat pads, i've used them for a year, under tile. I can understand the fire hazard concern though, so that's your choice. I obviously haven't had anything burn down.
I really had no choice, i also couldn't find an affordable uth in my area. human heat pads are like $16 cnd, the reptile ones for the same size were at least $60. And my last one fritz out on me after 4 years.

I simply can't afford the reptile ones so I went with the human heat pads and so far so good.
If anything does happen though you'll be sure i'll post it.

I use a human heat pad for hatchlings only on a temporary setup for their first few weeks while their in a very small setup. I've done this for a couple years and never had a problem. I would use caution as to what you have the heat pad sitting on though, they will heat what ever they are laying on.

Huh... I can get UTH's for $10 for the ones that go to a 10 gallon tank... I use them on 20 gallon tanks as well with no problem if used with a couple tiles to spread the heat out evenly. For a 20 gallon one its like $15 at my local pet shop. Cheapest I can find since I haven't been able to find Flexwatt cheap enough with all the supplies to make my own...

Yeah I know.. I just find it odd that the same exact item should cost different amounts in different places... I run into that with my rat feeds and stuff though too... One place $10 for 50 lbs.. another place $15 for the same amount.. Its kinda stupid really.
