There is a big demand for cuban rock iguanas

Sam-N-Ella Jun 11, 2004 11:46 PM

I went to a reptile show last weekend in Melbourne, Fl. I brought Chaos(my cuban)and it was like he was a celebrity. People wanted to buy him, and said they have been looking for one for a long time. I am still not sure how old he is, but there was a 4 year old cuban there that wasn't even half Chaos's size. They guy who had that one guessed Chaos was at least 6 or 7 years old. I saw a lot of really awesome green iggys and the people who had them were amazed by Chaos. I couldn't take 2 steps without 10 people coming up to me asking questions and wanting to touch him or take his picture. It was really cool and I'm not complaining at all. What I am wondering is...Does anyone think it would be a good idea for me to find a female and mate him. And if so, how would I go about doing this. Do I need a licsence or anything to sell them or breed them? If I did I would make sure who ever wanted one knew about iguanas and how to care for them. Thanks.

When I have my Cyclura out in public at the expos and educational presentations alot of people think they are cool and talk about having one but 98% of them are just talking and are the kind of people that shouldn't own an iguana of any sort.

If you look at the classifieds right here on KS you will see ads for young Cubans all the time. I've seen the same ad posted for months at a time so I don't think the demand is quite as high as you might think. Last October, at the Tinley Park show near Chicago, one of the larger reptile dealers had a couple of baby Cubans. I looked at them pretty hard and considered getting another but decided against it. They didn't sell all weekend.

That's what I thought also, but I was really surprised even some of the vendors wanted him. The people who wanted to buy him already had large green iggys and another had a blackthroat monitor. I wouldn't sell him though. It might be the part of the country too. I actually don't think I would breed and sell any iggys because that would just increase the number of iggys that may eventually not be wanted.
