Are snake sausages really just spam?

kc0bus Jun 12, 2004 05:35 AM

I am wondering which types of snakes will most readily eat snake sausages? Can snakes be fed and maintained exclusively on snake sausages alone or should they be given the ocassional pinkie or furry? And last but not least; snake sausages look suspiciously like chunks of "Spam" to me. Has anyone tried to feed their snake spam? After all, spam is just a chunk of meat just like snake sausages and is far more readily availible.....

I've been wondering about this for awhile now...

Many thanks,
Scott

To my knowledge the only snakes I know of that will eat those are Western Hognoses. But then I never looked too closely at this since mine eat mice ok.

My understanding is that snake sausages actually contain whole ground up mice. If that's actually the case there would be nothing too bad about feeding them, although they're expensive. Spam is not an adequate food unless it's created by putting an entire pig in a blender. Not that I wouldn't pay to see that.
Anyway, I read a rather professional looking book that said indigo snakes, among other species, will eat cat food, so snakes exist that might possibly eat spam. Snakes will also eat rotting carcasses so we shouldn't put too much stock in it.
I wouldn't feed cat food, though despite what that book said. I actually wouldn't feed most cat food to cats, because I think it actually IS just spam. However, high grade dog food can be used for short periods in extreme circumstances.

I couldn't even get my corn snakes to eat the sausages. And they're horribly expensive. I'd pass if you're thinking about trying them. That's just me...
